How to Become an FSSAI-Registered Food Business.
- To fall under the definition of “petty food manufacturer,” you must apply for registration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The conditions are as follows:
- If you sell or manufacture any food product, or if you operate a temporary stall or are a hawker or itinerant vendor, or if you distribute foods at social events other than weddings, you must have a licence.
- The average annual turnover of the company is less than 12 lacs.
- The production capacity of food other than meat and meat products and milk and milk products does not exceed 100 kilograms per liter per day.
- Milk procurement of up to 500 litres per day or 2.5MT solid milk per year.
- A slaughterhouse may kill two large animals, ten small animals or 50 poultry birds per day in its slaughtering capacity.
- FBO specializes in manufacturing or processing unique products.

Track status of FSSAI Application – If you apply for a Food licence, you can follow the status of your application online. Usually, licencing authorities grant registration within seven days of the application being filed, but if they require inspection of your premises, it will delay the processing time. On inspection they may raise clarifications in the application, requiring modification, addition or deletion in the application.

Grant of Registration – When your application is approved, you’ll receive a Registration Certificate and photo ID Card from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The certificate has a photo of your food business operator (FBO), a Quick Response (QR) code, and a 14-digit FSSAI registration number that begins with 2.
